Happy new year everyone! Telluride got a big dump over the last few days and I made it out for a great ski tour today in deep powder. This shot is from the top of the ridgeline I climbed looking out to Yellow mountain above the Ophir Valley.

In a mad dash to Montrose for Christmas presents early in the morning on Christmas eve I shot some photos of the sunrise on the Sneffels range. The warm morning light was just catching the snow blowing off the peaks.

I woke up very early this morning and drove up to Lizard Head pass with the intentions of skinning into an area that I frequently visit in the summer to get first light on the Wilson range. When I started my ski tour in the dark I realized there was no way I was going to make it to the area I wanted to go to. I ended up climbing up to the top of a ridge and got first light on the mountains I was looking for but it was not the good position that I had in mind. I did have a great ski tour and got some good turns on the way down!

I stood in the freezing cold at dusk last night taking some long exposures on Main St. The fresh snow really brings a glow to the mountains and town. When temps are really cold and there are no clouds at sunset you get some subtle but great color in the sky and on the mountains.

The snow storm we have been waiting for finally hit dumping 18 inches of fresh powder. I went for a backcountry ski tour yesterday but the avalanche conditions were as sketchy as I have every seen. Today I took it easy and Caz and I went for a hike in the snow, it’s her favorite time of year.

I was going through old shots last night and came across this kayak shot from Little Molas lake at the end of the summer. I had two long night exposures that I blended together to get the above image. I like how this one turned out, others that I was messing with and creating an “HDR” image look too fake. An HDR image is basically taking multiple shots of the same scene at different exposures and using some software to blend them together. You see these type of shots all over the web now days and most of them look fake or cartoonish, it’s definitely easy to get carried away with this but the final product is less photography and more art in my opinion.

I have been spending a lot of time in front of my computer over the last few weeks and not much time taking photos. We have had a few decent snow storms but the skiing is still very thin. I have done a couple backcountry tours and have gotten some good turns but we definitely need more snow for things to get good. The photo above in from last week on the San Miguel which was a fun day but I’m now just hoping for more powder to play with!
