Best 10 from 2011

Wow, what a great year.  2011 flew by and as I look forward to new opportunities and adventures in the coming year it’s always helpful to take a minute to look back over the last year.  These are my favorites from the past year, probably more for sentimental value than actual image quality but anyways here they are…

Olympic National Park

Traveling through the Pacific Northwest I experienced long periods of socked in weather with a fleeting moment of brilliant perfect light.  It required patience at a whole new level to stay at a great spot and wait for the right light.  I really like to move on if the weather gets bad so I struggled a bit making myself wait out the weather.  The above photo is from 2nd beach in Olympic National Park.  This sunset was one of the best on my trip as the storm was clearing.

Cascade Falls on Orcas Island

While on the San Juan Islands I was really impressed with the wildness on the interior of the islands which I did not expect.  The great state parks and small mountains were a welcome reprieve to stretch my legs and get away from the sea kayak for a bit.  The photo above is Cascade falls on Orcas island.  I have many versions of this waterfall but I really like this shot which is just the very upper part of the falls.  The moss covered logs are well lit and give a good sense of what this area is like.  I think most people would probably prefer the grand scenic of the entire falls but for some reason this one seems to speak to me.

Back in Telluride

I returned from my trip a few days ago and have slowly been processing my images.  My laptop broke early on in the trip so I was unable to do much posting or work on the road.  The Pacific Northwest was amazing with the highlight for me being the San Juan Islands.  I’m in the process of adding images from the trip to my website and will post some more on this blog as I go.  The above image is Palouse Falls in eastern Washington.  This is an amazing waterfall that lies in the high desert and was really flowing when I was there.

Oregon Coast

I’m up on the Olympic peninsula now but I have not posted for a while so I thought I would share this shot from the southern Oregon coast I took last week.  It’s such a rugged and wild coastline with amazing scenery around every corner.  The shot above is from Whaleshead beach where a beautiful little unnamed creek comes flowing down into the ocean after the heavy rains I experienced for the past few days.

I spent a few more nights camping along the Lost Coast and shooting photos.  It’s such a wild a remote place, one of my favorites on the trip so far.  It has started raining really hard and looks like I looking at a few more drenched days.  I’m making my way up to the Oregon coast at a slow pace due to 3 flat tires so far…

Road Trip

I have been on the road , and river, since April 3rd and things are going great.  The 5 day river trip on the Green river turned out to be a little more of an adventure than I though it would.  A giant storm system moved in on us and we battled very high winds which made the paddling interesting.  From there I wondered through Nevada and on to Northern California where I am now.  I’m digging the road life, living out of my car with my 2 dogs getting back to the simple life.  I was at the Lost Coast yesterday when I got a flat tire so I had to come back to town to take care of it.  I plan on heading back to the remote shore later today and will camp there for a few.

Bacalar Lake

Bacalar lake is a freshwater paradise very close to the Belize border in Mexico.  It’s dubbed “the lake of the 7 blues” by the locals and it definitely lives up to that title.

I just returned from another great visit to the Yucatan in Mexico.  We flew in during a hurricane but the weather turned out to be perfect after the first evening.  We split our time between snorkeling, swimming, and a heavy dose of fly-fishing.  I will post more images from the trip in the coming days.
